The Trinity College London examination system is one of the world’s most widely recognized examination systems for piano and other musical instruments. We at Klavierstunde München are therefore proud to have been selected as a Trinity College London Registered Exam Center to administer the Trinity graded exams in Munich.
The Trinity College London examination system is designed to provide an assessment of a student's skills—in this case, in the area of piano performance. However, there are also Trinity exams for many other areas.
This system has a long tradition: Exams have been administered since 1877. They allow for an assessment of proficiency that is independent of age. There are nine exam levels in total: Initial (beginner) followed by Grades 1 through 8. A certificate is issued upon passing. In addition, there is an oral evaluation and a score. The exams are practice-oriented, standardized, and therefore clear and transparent in their assessment.
First of all, an exam system like this can help structure one’s own development process. Much like the belt system in martial arts, exams that assess musical skills also help define new goals in the learning process that one can work toward.
But there are even more benefits. Because the system is internationally recognized, the exams can also be submitted as part of international college applications—for example, in the U.S. or the U.K.—and may count toward credit points. Points can also be awarded toward the International Baccalaureate (IB) upon submission of a Trinity certificate.
The higher examination levels also pave the way for further musical training at national and international universities.
The exam consists of three parts. You have the option to choose your own areas of focus, depending on where your musical strengths lie.
The most important part of the exam is the practical component: pieces are selected from the exam system’s repertoire lists to represent a wide variety of styles and genres. This allows the student to showcase their own musical identity. Other options include playing a duet (levels: beginner through Level 3) or presenting an original composition. Starting at Level 6, students must choose from two lists. One list includes pieces that emphasize technical skills, while the other includes pieces that focus on interpretive techniques.
The second part of the exam assesses technical skills by evaluating the candidates' performance on a series of technical exercises. This includes playing scales and arpeggios. The exercises are designed to demonstrate key aspects of performance technique.
The third part consists of what are known as “supporting tests,” which assess musical abilities in a broader sense—including visual perception, aural skills, improvisation, and music theory. Candidates can choose which skills they would like to demonstrate in this section. This part therefore allows candidates to showcase their musical abilities in a variety of ways.
Examiners travel from London to administer the exams. This ensures that the exams are conducted in a completely independent and impartial manner. For this reason, the exams must be organized as group sessions with a minimum of 40 examinees, which must be planned well in advance.
In 2020, Trinity adapted to the extraordinary circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and introduced Digital Music Grades, which are administered online. Digital Music Grades are accepted and valued just as much as the in-person grade examinations. This new format of online testing allows us to offer exam dates flexibly throughout the year.
The exams are conducted in English, but a translator may be called upon.
