Early Music Education for Children Ages 3 to 4

In Pre-Notes, children ages 3 to 4 discover the piano. They listen, move to the music, and explore the keys. We sing together and play Orff instruments. You or a trusted adult can join in. When selecting a class, we also take into account how far your child has already progressed.

What Your Child Will Learn

Learning About Music Through Play

Singing and Listening

The children sing songs and play simple musical echo games: They hear a sequence of notes and sing it back. This helps them learn to distinguish between high and low notes, listen carefully, and use their voices to try out what they’ve heard.

Feel the rhythm

The children walk, clap, and move to the steady beat of the music. They take turns playing games and respond to one another. In doing so, they practice keeping a rhythm and playing together.

Moving Your Hands and Fingers

Through arts and crafts, children practice small, precise movements. At the piano, they experiment with how to use their hands, fingers, and arms. They become familiar with the keys and hear the sounds they produce.

Discover Patterns

The children recognize recurring patterns in songs and games. On the piano, for example, they look for groups of two and three black keys. They also learn letters and numbers in connection with music.

A rainbow becomes a movement

The seasons and familiar images accompany the piano pieces. A rainbow inspires a sweeping arm movement, while the steps of a crab inspire short, individual notes.

Your child will use their hands and arms to create these images and listen to how the music sounds. Together with you or a trusted adult, they will also experiment with rhythms and sounds on Orff instruments.

The KeyNotes Concept

Making Music Bilingually

We sing many songs in English and use English note names and workbooks. We explain the exercises in German.

Your child hears English words in songs and sings along. While doing so, your child moves to the music and plays with the other children.

Good to Know

Questions About Pre-Notes

What age group is Pre-Notes intended for?

The program is designed for children ages 3 to 4. If you're unsure which class is right for your child, we'd be happy to advise you.

Is that already considered a traditional piano lesson?

In Pre-Notes, your child first discovers the piano and prepares for piano lessons through play. They sing, move to the music, and experiment with sounds. They’ll learn to play systematically from sheet music later on.

Does my child need any prior knowledge?

No. Your child can participate even without any prior musical experience.

Should my child practice at home?

When your child is 3–4 years old, let them make music at home however they like. Sing together, clap out rhythms, or experiment with sounds. You don’t need set practice times or a specific instrument to do this.

Do parents stay with their children during the class?

Yes. In Pre-Notes classes, a parent or trusted caregiver accompanies the child. Together, they sing, move, and explore sounds. This way, your child can take their first steps in music with a familiar person by their side.

Which program would be a good fit for that?

At Little KeyNotes, children ages 4 to 5 play their first simple melodies and get to know the keyboard. Your child can build on the experience they gained in Pre-Notes.
